Excellent. The penalty was gone and his mind points had soared to a lofty ten. He was a damned genius! He felt like one anyway. Whether he could master magic and actually do anything useful with it remained to be seen.

Cheren leaned forward. “Did you dream?”

“Uh... no. It was just dark and then you were waking me up.”

“Hmmm. Some undead report dreams. I've read that anyway, of those that can talk that is,” she turned on her heel. “Now, let's teach you some magic.”

On the wall nearby was an old yellowed poster. Cheren had to move a couple of book stacks out of the way so Max could see the bottom half of it. It looked like a drawing of a crystal.

“This is one possible visualization of magic,” Cheren said. “As you can see, there are four basic cornerstones of it, the four forces, if you will. Fire, water, air, and land. You can see those represented as the four lines at the corners of the crystal. You understand?”

“Is there some meaning to the lines that circle them?” Max asked, referring to circles drawn on the outside of the crystal shape that reminded him of planetary orbits. He had an idea what they might be, however, as they all had an orientation, a direction, like curved vectors.

“Those are the interactions between the elements, but grossly simplified. Water subsumes fire subsumes air subsumes land subsumes water, get it?”

“Like paper rock scissors,” Max replied. So far, everything was exactly like what he remembered from the games.

“Here's where it gets interesting,” Cheren said as she pointed to the top and bottom points of the diagram. “These are light and dark. So above the center, there are four more elements, we call them affinities. They are the light versions of the four basic elements.”

This was not from the game. This was new. It was fascinating... but also a problem. He'd gotten along pretty well thus far because he knew how those games worked. For the most part anyway. Now here was something completely different. That was interesting but also dangerous.

“And the dark has their own,” Max said, his eyes drifting to the bottom of the diagram.

“Exactly,” Cheren replied. “And those also have interactions... and they aren't always readily understandable.”

Max could see that. The orbits that spun from the top to the bottom corners of the crystal-shaped diagram were faded, and complex.

"To add even more nuance, many creatures, like undead, have natural connections with certain affinities. In your case that's Danu, commonly called decay or death, it's the dark aspect of land."

“Oh...” Max said.

“The spider-folk have a natural affinity with decay as well. They too are immune to poison damage and can do some incredible things with their webs but they pay for it by being unable to use magic,” she said.

“I can use magic, I could do that even when I was a brawler. Though I only had one magic point to use, it's really helped me out,” Max said.

“You're different. Don't ask me why.
